For the first time in French since the 60s, this guide offers all the necessary information concerning the identification of species and subspecies, measurements, moult, sex, and age to ringers and birders handling birds. This second edition updates the coverage from France to Western Europe. The 305 species (155 and 150 non-passerines passerines), most captured in Western Europe by general ringers are detailed. To avoid confusion, their identification is directly compared with those of more than 550 similar-looking species.
Besides the personal observations of the author, this guide is a compilation of a vast amount of literature scattered and often inaccessible to most French ringers. It is more than a simple adaptation or update of English-speaking guides published over 20 years ago. Those are nevertheless needed for species not covered in this guide. The consistent treatment of all groups of species avoids the pitfall of having to handle differently designed work.
